Popular multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game, League of Legends, is the latest sport sanctioned to be held within Australia’s largest multisport university events, the Regional and Australian University Games.
League of Legends, a fast paced, competitive online game, is played by 27 million people each day.
Developed by Riot Games, League of Legends sees two teams of five powerful champions, each with a unique design and playstyle, battle head to head across multiple battlefields and game modes.
The sanctioning of an esport into the Unigames program allows for more students to get involved in representing their universities and TAFEs at a regional and national level.
The new inclusion is in response to the evolving generation of gaming sportspeople.
The tertiary education community is embracing new technologies, such as esports, as tools to increase engagement of university students on campus.
“The student engagement opportunities that result from the rapidly increasing popularity of esports across campuses in Australia has certainly grabbed our attention,” Australian University Sport CEO Don Knapp said.
“Australian University Sport is keen to promote student experience through the League of
Legends platform as yet another means of expanding our reach to broader campus communities.”
“This is an exciting time for League of Legends players as esports becomes more widely recognised as a competitive sport. To be the best, League of Legends requires mental strength, team work and communication, so it’s just like many other team sports,” said Daniel Ringland, Head of esports at Riot Games Oceania.
The Regionals for League of Legends will be held online for the Eastern, Southern and Northern regions, as well as New Zealand and Wildcard (including Western Australia and regions not covered by the four groups) from 5-7 July 2016.
The Regional University Games will serve as the qualifying competition for a range of sports, including League of Legends, at the 2016 Australian University Games (25-30 September) in Perth.
